The government of Gujarat has launched a mobile application of the existing 181 Abhayam helpline number for women's safety.

The application features a panic button, call-on-shake, and lat-long to ensure help is readily available to women if and when required. A special police staff has been assigned specifically for the app; the staff would reach to the women seeking help through the application.

The helpline is already available round-the-clock in the form of telecommunication helpline number 181. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Minister of State for Home Pradipsinh Jadeja and Minister of State for Women and Child Welfare, Vibhavari Dave launched the application on Monday in Gandhinagar.

In case of an emergency, women can press the panic button to call the Abhayam police and volunteers. The same service is available through automatic call to helpline volunteers, when a woman shakes the mobile.

The application is also equipped to find the location of the caller through the lat-long service, so that the police and volunteers can reach through the GPS system in shortest period of time.

The service is also linked with medical emergency service 108, and volunteers also provide mental counselling to women, if needed. The first acclaimed women helpline in India, Abhayam was launched on February 1, 2014 and over four lakh women have availed the service, while over 82,000 women were rescued from dangerous situation.

Abhayam does not reveal the identity of its users.
