Gujarat government did not spend Rs. 88.91 crore out of total Rs. 150 crore earmarked for welfare schemes for minorities in last two years. The government accepted this on the records of Gujarat assembly. Answering to question by Congress MLA from Dariyapur Gyasuddin Shaikh, the social justice and empowerment minister answered accordingly on Tuesday.

Shaikh had sought the details from minister by asking a question meant for debate in question hour but could not be included for discussion. However, the minister gave the answer in writing that was put over the records of assembly.

Shaikh asked, “How much ammount of grants were spared for minorities by Gujarat government in last two years, how much of grants remained unutilised and why?” The minister replied, “Total of Rs. 150.05 crore grants were earmarked in two years out of that Rs61.14 crore were spent while Rs88.91 crore remained unspent. The grants of Rs. 50 crore could not be utilised in year 2015-16 because the scholarships were credited into bank accounts of beneficiaries under DBT, while many of the educational institutions did not sent proposals for scholarships in a prescribed period.”

Talking to media persons, Shaikh said, “When UPA was in power in the centre, they had implemented pre-matriculate scholarships but that was challenged by Gujarat government in high court and supreme court. The court ordered them to pay scholarships but since the NDA government came to power they curtailed the number of scholarships and more than 50% students of minority community could not avail it.” “The UPA had also implemented 15 points programme for minorities but Gujarat government led by BJP never acted on this programme for 11 years and kept on propagating Sab Ka Saath Sab Ka Vikas,” added Shaikh.
