Gujarat BJP has decided to observe "Black Day" on June 26 to mark the Emergency period.

The ruling party will organize state-level programme in Ahmedabad during which party chief Amit Shah will felicitate the workers who protested the Emergency imposed by Congress Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Party leaders and office bearers have been asked to prepare and submit lists of 'Misa Vasi' living in their area. CM Vijay Rupani who is also one of the Misa vasis will give a special address on the occasion.

Those who actively protested against the imposition of Emergency and faced imprisonment for voicing dissent are known as 'Misa vasi' as the then government booked them under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act, 1971 (MISA), imposed by Gandhi during the period.

A senior BJP leader said: "This day is going to be marked to protest the autocratic rule of former PM Indira Gandhi. Today's generation will be hardly aware of the emergency imposed by her and the atrocities they meted out to the leaders of the BJP and common people. The Congress is literally blaming the BJP-led central government for the strict-but-reformative actions and those who do not know about Indira's Emergency could easily be drawn. But our attempt is to show mirror to the Congress and put facts before the youth."

He said the "Black Day" is June 25 as Emergency was imposed on that day but the BJP's Chintan Shibir will be held on June 24 and 25, and so the Gujarat unit of the party will mark it on June 26.

"The programme, however, has not been announced officially by our party unit but the announcement will be made soon."

"As of now, we have been asking our workers and members of different units to collect the information on Misa Vasi in their areas and submit the same to party," added the leader.
