The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets milk and milk products under the brand name Amul, has issued a legal notice to Google India alleging the search giant benefited from ad campaigns, which are being misused to con innocent individuals in the name of Amul. The notice was issued on January 10.

Amul said in a release that a series of fake B2B campaigns, regarding Amul parlours and distributors, were started through fake websites using Google Search ads since September.

"Miscreants have been running paid ads on Google Search engine against keywords such as Amul Franchisee, Amul Parlour, and Amul Distributor among others, with the intent of duping individuals with fake promises of business opportunities with Amul," it said.

Upon opening the websites, individuals are required to fill forms, after which they receive calls from unknown numbers to pay registration fees ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 5 lakh.

"Once the payment is made, miscreants stop all forms of communication," it said.

The dairy behemoth said it had sought Google help to stop such miscreants from using the platform, and also ran ads on the search engine to educate customers against such campaigns.

Amul said that it has come across several individuals who have fallen prey to such schemes in the past four months.

The dairy major said the most effective way to stop such activities is to prevent use of platforms such as Google search.

"It has been observed that Google Ads is allowing such miscreants to use its paid promotion services without any background checks, and in the process, earning revenues from click-based advertising," Amul said, adding that this has led it to issue notice to Google India holding it accountable for misuse of the platform. Amul said it had also issued a notice to goDaddy.com for earning revenues from such individuals through subscriptions.
