With Amul's 1000 metric tonne (MT) chocolate plant — inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday at Mogar village near the town of Anand in central Gujarat — the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) is looking to imprint the 'Made in India' label on the global chocolate market.

Talking about the planning the future with regards the same, GCMMF managing director, RS Sodhi, said, "We have been trying to increase our chocolate manufacturing capacity. Presently, we have embarked upon 600 MT per month and that will reach up to 1000 MT in the next few months. We have a very nominal existence in foreign markets but we wish to capture a considerable market share at the global level once we increase our capacity."

"To woo the consumers, we have introduced over 20 flavours that include rich cocoa dark chocolate with cocoa content up to 60% and more. We are also manufacturing camel milk chocolate, which sees a good demand from the international consumers. Besides that, we are going to making Orange, Madagascar, Tanzania, Ecuador and other flavours which are hot in the global market and these can be exported," Sodhi added.

Looking at the local market trends, India has a total market for chocolate of some Rs 1,500 crore and Amul alone enjoys around 10% market share which has been rising. Amul has a total revenue of nearly Rs 150 crore and the GCMMF's planning is to take it even higher.

"So far, we have been producing the chocolates that is at par with the demand of Amul Chocolates in Indian markets and chocolate sell has a good share in total revenue of GCMMF, but we wish to take it even higher. It will be reaching six to seven times more in the next three to four years," Sodhi said.

The chocolate plant that the PM inaugurated is built with the investment of Rs 190 crore. The brand Amul is going to turn 75 years old in 2021. PM Modi also wished the brand to march ahead. "This is an unstoppable team and I really admire their passion and spirit. Now, they should resolve to set the new target that Amul can set for their own 75th anniversary and for 2022 wherein India will celebrate 75 years of independence."
