A stock of around 8,000 quintal groundnut worth Rs 3.90 crore stored at a warehouse in Rajkot city was gutted in a fire late on Sunday. The cause of the fire has not been ascertained yet and short circuit has been ruled out it did not have power connection.

Considering this is the third incident in which fire has destroyed huge stock of groundnut purchased by the Gujarat government at minimum support price (MSP) from farmers, CM Vijay Rupani has ordered a CID probe into Sunday's fire incident, according to Agriculture minister RC Faldu.

The blaze was so big that it took the fire brigade till Monday afternoon to douse it. Experts from the forensic science laboratory (FSL) was rushed to the spot to ascertain the cause of fire.

The collector ordered a magisterial inquiry, while the district police superintendent formed three teams to investigate the incident.

Rupani told media persons in Gandhinagar that the government was taking the incident seriously.

Faldu said, "This groundnut was procured by the Centre (through NAFED). I firmly believe it could be a deliberate attempt to malign the BJP government's image. We will not spare anyone found guilty of this conspiracy. The CM has a CID probe into the incident."

The fire broke out at the warehouse of a firm, National Cotton, located near the Shapar industrial area, rented by the NAFED, an agency assigned by the central government to purchase groundnuts from farmers at MSP. Earlier, fire destroyed groundnut stored at private warehouses in Gondal town of Rajkot district and Gandhidham town of Kutch.

"Out of the total 42,000 sacks that were kept in the private warehouse, we managed to save 15,000. But around 26,000 sacks, with groundnut worth Rs 3 crore, were gutted in the fire," Faldu said, about Sunday's fire.
