The 371 candidates were left in the fray in the 26 Lok Sabha seats of the state on Monday after more than 80 candidates withdrew their nominations, official sources said. Monday was the last day for withdrawal of candidatures.
As many as 572 nominations were received for the 26 LS seats, of which 120 nominations were rejected after scrutiny, leaving 452 candidates in the fray. Officials said that 81 more candidates withdrew their nominations leaving 371 candidates in the election fray.
The number of contesting candidates in the coming polls is the highest in the last six LS elections, and the third highest overall after 577 candidates in 1996 and 420 candidates in 1991, according to Election Commission data. The number of contesting candidates was 334 in 2014 elections and 359 in 2009.
With 31, Surendranagar Lok Sabha seat has the highest number among all the 26 seats. Congress MLA Soma Patel is pitted against BJP's Mahendra Munjpara in the Koli-dominated seat of Saurashtra.
Jamnagar Lok Sabha, represented by BJP's Poonam Madam, has 28 candidates left in the fray after withdrawal of nominations by six candidates.
Ahmedabad East, from where BJP has fielded MLA Hasmukh Patel, and Congress Geeta Patel, has 26 candidates in the fray, followed by Navsari with 25 candidates, and Sabarkantha with 20 candidates.
Panchmahal seat has six contesting candidates, the lowest in the state, followed by Kheda and Dahod ST with seven each. Chhota Udepur ST seat has eight candidates, and Valsad ST nine.
