A group of 18 parents has written to the Education Department seeking their intervention stating that Anand Niketan school had denied them admission despite having admission cards.

Speaking about the matter, Gulmoin Khokhar, convener of Zubeida Seva Ghar that works for the RTE cause, said: "These parents have got the admission card from the Centre after they were shortlisted in round one of RTE admissions. Despite that, they are being rejected from many schools."

A video that has gone viral on social media shows an Anand Niketan official telling parents waiting outside the gate that their admission cards were not enough for admissions and the authorities were waiting for the high court's decision on the matter before they proceeded with the admission process.

When DNA contacted Anand Niketan's director Nashy Chauhan, she said, "We have been checking the documents and all. In cases where the age is an issue, they have been informed about our wait for the high court order."

State govt's envisage:

This year the state government increased RTE seats by 75%. They said that over one lakh children would get into schools this year as opposed to 60,000 last year. The government also said that there would be a counsellor at every form-receiving centre to help parents fill up the school admission forms. While it all looked quite rosy till mid-May, the real picture was revealed when the government shared that 32,000 seats were lying vacant after the first round of admissions. Of the 1,25,729 applications approved by the District Primary Education Officer, only 80,199 had got admissions.

The government also issued a booklet with contacts of all officers at form-receiving centres so that parents could get in touch with them for queries. Parents were given an option to choose schools within six kilometres of distance. The state government also brought ahead the category for children of martyrs and BPL card holders on the merit list.

Many parents withdraw admission of their children

Disappointed with the school allotment process, many parents withdrew admissions after they were turned away when they visited the DEO office to file objection applications. Sharing her ordeal, Gitaben Kantibhai Parmar, a resident of Shankar Bhuvan Chapra near Bhawan’s college, said: “When my daughter was selected for admissions under the RTE, we were on cloud nine. However, when we visited RH Kapadia school in Ratanpol, allotted to her, we found that it is not viable for us to send her every day. My husband is a labourer and barely earns our living. We have a family of five hence wanted free education for my daughter. While we had selected five schools from our area, we do not know how this school was allotted to my daughter.” While the second round of admissions was to be held from May 28 to June 19, it has not begun yet. Government officials cite the pending case in the high court for the delay.
