State pollution watchdog, Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB), issued a notice to the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) on Thursday, that treats pollutants of close to 125 textile processing units in Narol industrial area.

The agency found that the pollution caused by discharged effluents is higher than the set limits and if the processing units to do not submit a roadmap to reduce the pollution load in a fortnight, then it will cut off their electrical connections.

“We have issued a notice to CETP. It was found that the COD level is higher than the said limit. We have sought a reply from them indicating the steps they will undertake to bring down the pollution level,” said KC Mistry, member secretary of GPCB.

Accordingly, against the prescribed cap of 250 mg/litre, COD was found to be 500 mg/litre.

Textile processors in Narol feel that close to 125 industrial units which discharge their effluents into CETP will be affected. Of these over 75 are large units, while the rest are smaller units.

“Effluents discharged by textile units are not highly polluted. As per the latest available data, COD level in our Gyaspur CETP (which treats effluents from Narol) is about 270 mg/litre. We can bring it down to  200 mg/litre. We will prepare a roadmap to reduce the pollution level and submit it to GPCB,” said a local industry leader.
