In a major blow to the higher education in Gujarat, the state government has sacked vice-chancellor of Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University in Patan over charges of corruption. The decision to remove Dr BA Prajapati from his post, who was appointed as the vice-chancellor in December 2016, was taken by the Chief Minister Vijay Rupani after an inquiry by the state Lokayukta concluded that he had misused his powers and indulged in serious irregularities and corruption.

A statement issued by the state government on Wednesday said that based on the inquiry report of the Lokayukta, the CM has removed Prajapati from the post. For few months now, Prajapati was facing serious allegations faculty members within the university.

Patan MLA Dr Kirit C Patel had demanded a detailed inquiry against Prajapati over allegations that included misutilisation of government funds, changing conditions in tender to favour certain parties, buying a new car despite having a dedicated car for the vice-chancellor, etc.

Prior to taking charge at North Gujarat university, Prajapati served as the vice-chancellor of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University.

Patel alleged that Prajapati misutilised funds by Rashtriya Uchchattar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) by constructing a sports facility and open air theatre instead of laboratories for students. In SEBC, apart from non-creamy layer, no one can avail reservation benefit but still, he appointed his own son Mayur Prajapati in architecture department by changing norms. He also gave permission to buy books worth Rs 35 lakhs in short time and in most of the purchase orders, instead of the department heads signature, his sons signature was allowed."

Further allegations included Prajapati buying a latest model of Innova as he did not want to use a car used by previous VC. The old car had not even completed 2,50,000 kms. In 2015, the university got A grade in NAAC. In December 2016, BA Prajapati was made the vice-chancellor. Despite reminding him again and again, he did not send reports to NAAC due to which the ranking of the institute will be impacted.
