Govt doles out sops ahead of elections

Around 15,000 employees of 105 municipalities will get benefit of 7th pay commission

Gujarat government has announced another package of Diwali gift for its employees and common citizens on the eve of the festival. The deputy chief minister, Nitin Patel, declared pay increment and extension of the scheme of free health services for the beneficiaries. The government has picked up the opportunity as the election commission has not announced the polls in the state, bringing a model code of conduct under implementation.

Speaking to the media, deputy chief minister Nitin Patel said, “As many as 15,000 employees working under 105 municipality bureaus in the state will get the benefit of seventh pay commission, which has been implemented for the employees. The civic bodies, which have maintained the standard of 48% of total expenses in the annual budget for salary payment to employees, have been given permission to give the pay hike as per 7th CPC.”

“We have also increased the pay of teaching and non-teaching staff of government-aided schools in the state. The state government has increased 57 to 70% salaries of these employees. The employees working in 113 grant in aid Industrial Training Institutes(ITIs) will also get the benefit of higher scale salaries after Diwali. Apart from the émployees of civic bodies and education institutions, the government would incur additional financial burden of Rs. 141 crore every year on its treasury,” added Patel.

The poor and the middle-class families will also get great benefits with free health services. The government has extended the total annual income limit of the family to 2.50 lakh from 1.50 lakh for the beneficiary families. Now the families having the total annual income of all members up to 2.50 lakh will get cashless health service up to Rs. 2 lakh in 162 government and private hospitals. 

This benefit will be available under Mukhyamantri Amrutam(MA) Vatsalya Yojana scheme of Gujarat government.

The deputy CM Patel said, “Poor and middle-class families will not get free health services for the ailments related to heart, kidney, brain, cancer, pregnancy, cases of newborns and serious accidental injuries, burns. More than 628 types of treatments and surgeries have been included in this cover. Over  4 crore beneficiaries will come under this scheme.”

“There are 21 government hospitals, 99 private super speciality hospitals and 42 stand-alone dialysis centres which give free treatment to beneficiaries under the MA Vatsalya scheme. The state government has sanctioned over 7.56 lakh claims of Rs. 1037.13 crore put by 50.46 lakh beneficiary families so far,” added Patel.

The government, in the last week, had sought time from the election commission to accomplish the flood relief and rehabilitation related works in Banaskantha and Patan districts before the code of conduct comes into force. The EC had granted more time accepting the appeal of the government. Following this, the commission announced polls in Himachal Pradesh.
