If it would not have been for that truant gold bar, Mohammad Nizam would have remained an unknown identity. However, as luck would have it, this Mumbaikar’s bid to smuggle in gold worth Rs22 lakh got into a sticky situation, leading Central Industrial Security force (CISF) sleuths at Ahmedabad International Airport catch him red-handed in the act early on Friday morning.

Mohammad Nizam, a resident of Halim Manzil on Mohammad Ali road in Mumbai had gone to Dubai a few days back. He arrived at Ahmedabad airport in a Spice Jet flight on Friday at 2:30am, bringing along with him 1 kg of gold bar from Dubai. However, he didn’t want to declare his precious asset at the customs check. According to custom officials, Nizam wrapped the gold bar with a plastic sheet and secured it with celotape. He deftly glued the bar beneath the trolley he was using to carry his luggage and also succeeded to pass through the custom check by showing his baggage only.

All went well as designed till he was about to reach the exit gate of the arrival lobby of the airport, when the gold bar lost its grip and fell on the floor, and stayed stuck to the ground being wrapped in celotape!

Nizam realized the design malfunction and tried to pick up his prized possession before being spotted, but the glue seemed a little too determined in its job, making Nizam’s job even difficult. Therefore, to free his hands for the task, Nizam decided to park his trolley in a corner, and that was his biggest undoing. As soon as he left, a CISF official spotted the wrapped packet on the floor and called a sniffer dog to check for any suspicious contents in it.

Nizam, who hurried back, told the CISF official that it belonged to him and asked the official to hand it over. However, the official smelt a rat and investigated the contents and discovered the gold bar. CISF informed customs department, who detained Nizam for allegedly trying to smuggle gold and handed him over to Sardarnagar police. After arresting Nizam, cops are investigating about the possibility of gold smuggling racket.
