GNLU student bags Rhodes Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded by the Rhodes Trust of Oxford University, UK and after clearing two stages of interviews

A student from Jammu and Kashmir pursuing his final year of BA LLB from the Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) in Gandhinagar has become its first student to have been selected for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University, UK in the academic session beginning 2018.

Sameer Rashid Bhatt, son of a government employee in J&K, is preparing a paper on Constitutional law and human rights and was nominated by the GNLU, which was founded in 2003.

The scholarship is awarded by the Rhodes Trust of Oxford University, UK and after clearing two stages of interviews, the Rhodes India panel selected him with four other students from India.

While speaking to DNA, Bhatt, said, "With this, October 29 has become the most memorable day in my life. I wish to pursue Bachelor of Civil Law (Equivalent to LLM in India) from Oxford and study subjects like Comparative Human Rights Law; Criminal Justice and Security and Constitutional Theory."

Bhatt said there were two rounds of the interview and in the final one for Law, he topped among 15 students. This panel was headed by Gopalkrishna Gandhi and nine other members, experts in their respective fields.

Attributing the success to GNLU, he said, "The University's culture and education has helped me clear all hurdles and crack these interviews."

GNLU faculty Saurabh Anand said, "He is a student convener in his branch and is also active in various fields. He is among the top 10 meritorious students of his batch."

He added, "Ever since we got to know about his selection for Rhodes, students are eager to get tips from Bhatt for the same."

Former US President Bill Clinton and former Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia have also been the beneficiaries of this prestigious scholarship.
