Get in touch with your extraordinary self: Anu Aga tells IIT Gandhinagar graduates

Do not settle yourself in mediocrity, get in touch with your extraordinary self was the message Anu Aga — Chairperson, Teach for India — gave to the graduating students of the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar. Aga was the chief guest at the 7th convocation of IIT Gandhinagar.

Aga encouraged the graduating students to deeply invest in health and wellness from a young age and asked them to join the Teach for India movement.

A total of 328 students were conferred degrees on Saturday including — 112 BTech students, 2 BTech-MTech dual degree students, 96 MTech students, 78 MSc students, 14 MA students, 24 PhD students and 2 PGDIIT students. 47 graduating students were awarded medals and awards including 21 gold medals, 10 silver medals, and 16 bronze medals for excellence in various categories like academics, outstanding research, overall performance, innovation, leadership, social service, arts and culture, and sports.

Speaking about the challenges she faced in her life, Aga said, "Nothing is permanent. Accept impermanence and mortality and do not give up in the face."

Highlighting the achievements of the institute, director of IIT-GN, Sudhir Jain said, "Opting for globalisation of academics, we have introduced a double degree programme in Materials Science & Engineering with Japanese Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST). Students from JAIST and IIT-GN will spend 15 months at their home institute and at least nine months at the host institute to complete the course and thesis requirements to receive two separate Masters degrees – one from IITGN and one from JAIST. This year we have admitted Masters students from Nepal, Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea and Turkey."

Over 40% BTech students graduating this year have received global exposure through study abroad programmes, summer internships or participation in international conferences," he added.

Talking about placements, professor Jain said, "A total of 121 companies had shown interest in participating in the IIT-GN campus recruitment this year. 82% have been recruited. Banas Dairy recruited maximum number of students, with 8 IIT-GN students this year, followed by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd and Testbook Edu Solutions Pvt Ltd, who recruited 6 students each. Of the students graduating today, 48 are going to pursue higher studies with 27 of them intending to obtain a PhD."
