The Gujarat High Court on Friday directed the state government to submit an affidavit with regard to its proposal to make treatment of swine flu in private hospitals free. The direction came from the division bench of Acting Chief Justice AS Dave and Justice Biren Vaishnav during the hearing of public interest litigation (PIL) questioning the lack of infrastructure and medical facilities in state-run hospitals, resulting in a surge in swine flu cases.

Notably, government pleader Manisha Shah on Friday submitted about a list of measures which have been already taken or are under consideration for tackling the rising number of swine flu cases. She submitted to the court that the government is considering making swine flu treatment free in private hospitals.

The state also submitted that all district hospitals have isolation ward and there are infrastructure and systems in place to ensure that samples taken from suspected swine flu patients are tested within 24 hours. Shah also pointed as that contrary to what the petitioner has been claiming, not all patients need to be admitted in isolation wards.

The government also submitted the status on staff shortage in Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, which has registered the maximum number of swine flu cases in the state. Notably, 1,057 positions out of the sanctioned strength of 2,661 are vacant in the hospital.

Meanwhile, advocate KR Koshti, appearing on behalf of the petitioner, submitted his inspection report of civil hospital, pointing out the loopholes in the state's largest hospital. However, the court was not very happy with the report and ordered the advocate to visit some AMC hospitals during the weekend and report the ground situation to it. The next hearing of the matter is scheduled for Tuesday.
