Fire incidents up 239% due to crackers in Ahmedabad

The unabated spark of Diwali festivities has left behind a charring reality. The burning figures show the cases of fire incidents rose from 36 in 2017 to 122 in 2018, a spurt by 239 per cent. The findings show that people hardly abided the Supreme Court order.

Statistics released by Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Service (AFES) shows 162 fire-related calls and 17 rescue calls were made to the agency between October 4 and 7. Out of the these, 122 calls were made from the city, AFES officers said.

Six major fire incidents were reported from Odhav, Saraspur, Naranpura, Vishala, Naroda and Delhi Darwaja. Officers said there were no casualty.

Also, 40 calls were made reporting short circuit, LPG cylinder leakage, vehicle engines catching fire, etc.

"This is the first time in last five years that we saw these many fire calls due to firecrackers. There were six major calls received during Diwali. Fortunately, no casualty was reported," Rajesh Bhatt, Additional Chief Fire Officer, said.

As per statistics of AFES, 130 calls were received during Diwali last year out of where only 36 fire incident happened due to Firecrackers, will rest were due to some other reasons. All 36 calls were minor fire incident cases and there was no casualty reported. While in 2016 a total of 142 calls were received, were 42 fire incident were reported due to a firecracker, during which 9 people were injured. In 2015 a total of 156 calls were received, were 45 incident happened due to firecrackers, in the incident 5 people were injured.
