Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Friday informed the Gujarat High Court that it has raised the fine amount on cattle owners by 200% in case an accident takes place. The move comes as a series of steps are being taken by the civic body to ensure that cattle menace soon ends.

AMC said that cattle owners will be charged Rs3000 against the earlier Rs1000. The proposal has been approved by the standing committee.

The civic body said also plans to announce certain roads as zero tolerance cattle zones and, in consultation with the state government, they are looking to provide space for cattle owners outside the city limits.

Explaining the series of measures, it told a division bench that the civic body has increased the number of teams that are being sent to capture such cattle. The counsel for the civic body also said that they would now be tagging the stray cattle and those caught again would have to pay more fine which it hopes will act as a deterrent of that the owners.

The AMC plans to use the penalty so collected to create awareness among owners.

On the issue of parking, the state said that it sees multi-level parking as one solution to the problem particularly in areas that have heavy traffic and a shortage of space. The state plans to have five such multi-level parking plots across the city in Prahlad Nagar, Bodakdev, Chandlodiya, Maninagar and Gulbai Tekra. It also said that the AMC has identified 25 parking plots with a capacity of parking 11792 two wheelers and 2020 four wheelers for a token fee and that it has also identified 48 such plots all over the city which can accommodate over 20k two-wheelers and 3000 cars and that these will be operational with a span of 10 days.
