Despite intensive promotions and marketing of Janmitra cards at many major events of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), there are very few takers for the civic body's newly introduced system. Under the Smart City project, the AMC has introduced a common card payment system called 'Janmitra Cards', an all-in-one prepaid card for financial transactions.

The card not only works for the civic body services, but can also be used as a debit card. However, it is not popular and has found very few takers. To add numbers, the AMC has asked all elected members to get it; it'll be provided free of charge to the councillors.

"To avail the card, there is a processing fee of Rs 50, but the civic body is not charging any money from councilors. All they have to submit is a copy of their respective Aadhar cards. Monday was the last day for submission," said an official.

A Congress councillor said, "They have asked me to submit documents as they are going to issue Janmitra cards to us. Now I don't travel in BRTS or AMTS. Also, I already have debit cards. Why do I need to get another card? I don't understand the free-of-charge providing of Janmitra cards, but as I had received a call from the secretary's office, I have no option but to submit the documents." The AMC had announced that it would replace all existing BRTS cards issued for students and commuters with Janmitra cards. More than 50,000 BRTS cards were issued, against which the AMC could replace only around 18,000 cards. Also, the civic body had announced a scheme of providing higher internet speeds for card holders on their free Wi-Fi service than common users.

But even this announcement wasn't enough for people to opt for Janmitra cards, there were hardly any inquiries. The AMC was then forced to provide the same speed of free internet services to all users.
