It was a woman versus a policewoman. Seeing police at the door, a woman lost her cool and stabbed a woman police sub-inspector (PSI). Following the attack, 40-year-old Hemali Dhebar was arrested on charges of attempt to murder and preventing a police officer from doing duty.

Dhebara lives with her two children at Purushottam Nagar near Little Flower School in the Chandkheda area. Police have learnt that the woman, a three-time divorcee, was involved in a property-related dispute with her own mother and husband.

Investigation revealed that the matter reached the high court in 2008. During a recent hearing of the case, the court had asked Sabarmati police station to serve notice on Dhebar. “After getting orders from the court, we sent our probationary woman PSI, Jyotsana Oad, to serve the notice on Dhebar in person at her home,” said VR Patel, a sub-inspector of Sabarmati.

Oad went to Dhebar’s house around 8.30 pm on Sunday night and as soon as she told the latter to take the court notice, she allegedly sent her children inside and started shouting at the PSI. “We have learned that Hemali is very short tempered. After verbally abusing Oad, she ran into the kitchen and rushed out with a knife. Before the PSI could react, she started stabbing her,” said Patel.

Injured in the back as well as in the shoulder and left hand, Oad immediately informed Patel about the attack. Soon, the Sabarmati and Chandkheda police rushed to Dhebar’s place. Since her house fell under the jurisdiction of the Chandkheda police, she was arrested by them. Oad was said to be out of danger after being treated at a nearby hospital.
