A father and son were killed and three of their family members were injured after the car they were travelling in was hit by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) on the Sarkhej-Sanand Highway around 2.45 am on Friday.

The police said the car turned turtle after it was hit by the speeding SUV. Its driver, who fled the spot and is yet to be identified, has been booked in a case of hit-and-run.

The incident took place near Andaz Party Lawn located off the Highway. The deceased were identified as Amit Pandya and Bipinchandra Pandya, residents of Bopal area.

A complaint was lodged by Amit's wife Kirti Pandya at the Sarkhej police station on Friday. She stated in her complaint that for the past three years, the couple and her in-laws were residing in Surat, as her husband had got a job in that city.

Late on Thursday night, they were driving to Ahmedabad to attend a family function. Her son Vivan, mother-in-law Jyoti and father-in-law Bipinchandra were accompanying them.

Kirti was driving the car. She slowed down her vehicle after spotting a speed breaker near the Andaz Party Lawn area. It was at that moment that the SUV hit them, flipping over theri car.

Locals in the area reached the accident spot and started rescuing the family members stuck inside the car. The 108 emergency service was also called, and all five family members were rushed to a civil hospital.

During treatment, her husband and father-in-law died as they had sustained major injuries. She, her son and mother-in-law survived with minor injuries.

The SUV driver had fled from the spot, leaving his vehicle behind. A Sarkhej police officer said they have lodged a case of hit-and-run.

"We have seized the SUV and have started an investigation to identify its owner and trace the driver. We are also trying to recover CCTV footage of the accident to identify the accused," PR Ramani, inspector of Sarkhej police station, said.
