A day after a 35-year-old farmer attempted suicide near the chief minister’s office, the state government termed it a politically motivated act.

Babusinh Chauhan from Bhilkua village of Arvalli district near Modasa consumed poison on the lawns near the CMO at the secretariat on Thursday.

Following the incident, the government had asked different agencies to conduct an investigation and prepare a report, which was submitted to the CM on Friday.

On Friday, the government said Chauhan was an active member of the Thakor Sena. It also claimed the theory that Chauhan had tried to end his life because he was debt-ridden was false.

The government issued a clarification about the incident on Friday in which investigation by different agencies like the police and the district collector of Aravalli was cited.

The government media release stated, “Babusinh had taken a loan of Rs99,000 from a local bank and failed to repay it. He had not cultivated any crop on his farm recently and had also passed himself off as a journalist and social activist in the past. After thorough investigation, it has also come to light that he is an active member of the Thakor Sena and all claims made in his favour are politically motivated.”

The letter also contained reports prepared by the superintendent of police of Arvalli district on the criminal records of Chauhan. It stated, “Since Chauhan is an active member of Thakor Sena, he tried to build pressure on the government for waiver of farmers’ debts through this act. He is a willful bank defaulter. Various police complaints have also been filed against him by different people for intimidating and collecting money and he had also issued death threats to some people.”
