While busy markets may spell good work for traders in the city, and the state in general, one group that is making the most of it is the fake currency dealers. They use the fake notes to pay for some small item and then pocket the original change. Due to the rush, traders do not have time to verify the nature of the notes.

Based on a tip-off, Chandkheda police on Saturday nabbed one Ashok Sharma near Visat petrol pump in New CG Road area of Chandkheda carrying fake notes of which 63 notes were of denomination of 500 and 24 of Rs1,000.

Sharma is a native of Rajasthan and has been working as a salesman of RO units in Gujarat. He used to get spare parts from New Delhi, assemble them here and then sell them. He has been living in Chandkheda and doing business in Ahmedabad for last two and half years.
Initially, Ashok claimed that he was unaware of the notes being fake. However, cops arrested him and began his interrogation. He later confessed that he had got the notes from one Om Prakash Sharma of Mathura and was planning to use them in state during Diwali.

Ashok claimed that Om Prakash had lured him with 50% profit in sale of fake notes. Accordingly, he would try to make small purchases with fake notes and pocket the original change. Diwali being a busy time for traders, he was sure of being able to circulate more fake notes in the market. He also told police that Om Prakash had come to the city a week ago as he planned to rent a house and a shop in whose garb he could do his business of fake notes. Ahmedabad police will go to Mathura shortly in search of Om Prakash.

Meanwhile, Ashok has hinted at more people like him trading in fake notes in Gujarat. The case has been handed over to SOG for further interrogation.
