In what could pose a serious question on the way answer sheets of students are evaluated by Gujarat Technological University (GTU), two engineering students, who were declared 'fail' by the varsity in specific subjects, turned out to have passed the exam after their answer sheets were checked by independent experts

However, the victory against the varsity was not easy and the duo won after they approached the Gujarat High Court which intervened in their matter.

Dhruvin Shah, a final year Computer Engineering student of GH Patel College of Engineering and Technology, had challenged the assessment of his answer sheet for the subject 'artificial intelligence', for which the examination was held by the varsity in April 2018. He had requested the court for a reassessment of his answer sheet by an independent subject expert and to direct the varsity to confer him with the Bachelor of Engineering degree.

After the high court sought a reply from the university on this dispute, the latter constituted a committee of subject experts to reassess Dhruvin's answer sheet.

After the reassessment was done, Dhruvin was found to have passed the exam and the university corrected its mistake.

Similarly, in the case of Ankita Babaria, a Civil Engineering student of Government Engineering College, Bharuch, the GTU had declared her 'fail' in the subject 'Numerical and statistical methods for civil engineering' during her semester IV examination held in November 2017. She had alleged that her answers in the subject were not assessed as per settled norms and therefore, it should be reassessed by an independent subject expert.

After the high court issued a notice to the university, the latter submitted before the court that the reassessment of Ankita's answer sheet by a committee of experts will be done within a period of 10 days.

After the reassessment, it was found that Ankita had passed the exam.
