The onset of pre-monsoon activities has brought respite to Amdavadis from scorching heat. The cloudy sky made the weather favourable on Wednesday and the local Met office predicts similar weather condition during daytime with possibility of thundershower towards evening on Thursday.

As per Ahmedabad meteorological centre forecast report, “Sky will be partly cloudy with possibility of rain or thundershower towards evening or night (on Thursday). The maximum temperature will be around 39 degree Celsius.”

Cool breeze after light shower on Tuesday night brought respite from the irksome humidity and high temperature. However, the wind also brought down several trees and hoardings on city roads. There were also some complaints of roads caving in.

According to the officials at the fire brigade department’s control room, as soon as the shower started, the control room was abuzz with complaints of tree falling.

“On Tuesday night, we received 23 such complaints from different parts of city. We also received around 18 calls for rescue and five complaints of short circuit because of rain,” said an official of the control room.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) was caught unawares as the sky opened up earlier than expected. The AMC had announced functioning of a central and six zonal control rooms from June 7. In absence of a control room, the AMC officials claimed they did not have data of rain fall in different parts of city on Tuesday evening.

“We have started the central control room from Wednesday. According to the data we procured from different zones, around 35 trees in city have fallen. Of these, 15 complaints were registered in central zone, one in south zone, 12 in new west zone and west zone,” said officials at the AMC’s central control room. The zonal control rooms will start from June 7, stated a communiqué from the AMC.

On Wednesday, the city registered maximum temperature of 37 degree Celsius and minimum of 24 degree Celsius. The humidity recorded in the morning was 70% while in evening it was 47%, according to figures from the meteorological centre in Ahmedabad.

Meanwhile, residents have already started pulling out raincoats and umbrellas. Others have started shopping for these items.
