Lawmakers in the state who are exiting Congress is because they are eyeing power, said Patidar leader and Congressman Hardik Patel. BJP is in power and Congress is not, he said in an interview to Zee 24 Kalak in the aftermath of former Congress MLA and Thakor leader Alpesh Thakor and Dhavalsinh Zala exiting Congress to join BJP on Thursday.

Hardik dismissed the notion that opposition leaders who are joining BJP are facing a threat under BJP rule and "the danger is not for those people (turncoats) but on the people who trusted them," said Patel.

"What if they are disillusioned by BJP in the next six months? Will they return to Congress? No one is questioning them," he said, lashing out at BJP for trying to buy MLAs instead of trying to free the people of the state from hardships they are facing.

When asked that the tram of three — Hardik Patel, Alpesh Thakor, and Jignesh Mevani — who brought new energy to 2017 election campaigns to the state legislature, is now broken, Patel said that his ideology is clear and it is about fighting for the rights of the people of the state.

"What is the point of joining BJP and then blaming Congress? It is BJP which is in the power in Gujarat for the past 25 years. However, government schools and colleges are in shambles, roads are damaged and villages devastated. Whom should we question? BJP obviously. If Congress was in power and is not working for the welfare of the people, it would have been fair to question it; but they are trying to make Congress accountable. This makes it very clear that they are not fighting on issues, they just want to grab power," he alleged.

He attributed Thakor's popularity to the fact that he was taking up issues of the masses and fighting against the powers. "People like leaders who fight against those who are in power. You got elected from Congress. You were popular, but that was because you were fighting against the government. Now you have switched to BJP. At a time when people of Gujarat are facing problems, you are praising the government. Radhanpur, from where Alpesh got elected is facing scarcity of water. There is scarcity in entire north Gujarat and Saurashtra. What is the point of blaming Congress here," said Patel.
