Kheda District Milk Producers Union chairman Ramsinh Parmar was unanimously elected the chairman of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) at Anand on Monday. Jetha Bharwad, incumbent vice-chairman, has been re-elected to the post.

Education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasma made the announcement at GCMMF headquarters in Anand on Monday. "All the 18 chairmen of member dairies are capable enough to lead the Federation. However, it was unanimously decided that Ramsinh Parmar should be the chairman and Jetha Bharwad should be the vice chairman," Chudasma told media persons here.

The announcement put an end to the speculations regarding who will head the prestigious body, which markets products under brand name Amul. Other cooperative leaders Jetha Bharwad, chairman of Panchmahal dairy and Shankar Chaudhary, chairman of Banas dairy Dairy were also in the fray for the top post. Both Chaudhary and Parmar had lost the recent elections to the state legislature. Chaudhary, a BJP loyalist, was considered to the the front runner for the post. Bharwad has also been eyeing the post for quite some time. He was the claimant to the post in previous elections, but he was placated by making him the vice chairman.

I hope they will continue to work in the best interest of the farmers," said Chudasma, adding that Bharwad becoming vice chairman is not cause conflict with office of profit provision.

A delegation comprising of the chairman of all the 18 dairies had met Chudasma and revenue minister Kaushik Patel in state capital Gandhinagar on Saturday. The board of GCMMF again met on Monday. Chaudhary proposed the name of Parmar for the post of chairman while outgoing chairman Jetha Patel proposed the name of Jetha Bharwad. Both proposals were unanimously accepted by other members of GCMMF Board. The chairman of district dairies are directors on the board of the Federation and elect the chairman.

Parmar is a veteran with over three decades of experience in leadership in cooperative dairy sector in Gujarat. A former Congressman, Parmar joined BJP in July last year. He had contested the recent elections to the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat from Thasra constituency, but lost.

Parmar succeeds Jetha Patel, whose two and a half year term has ended. Other cooperative leaders Jetha Bharwad, chairman of Banaskantha dairy and Shankar Chaudhary, chairman of Sabar Dairy were also in the fray for the top post.

On Shankar Chaudhary not being able to make it to the top post, Chudasma said that there BJP is a big party in Gujarat and is also the ruling party in the state. So Chaudhary would be accommodated elsewhere.
