Enhance state allocation to 52%: Gujarat Congress

Citing states' liabilities and functions, the Opposition Congress asked the 15th Finance Commission to enhance states' share of central taxes to 52% from the existing 42%. The states' share of the central taxes kitty was 32% before the 14th Finance Commission.

A delegation of state Congress leaders met the Commission members and submitted a memorandum elaborating on reasons for seeking higher share for states.

Led by former IAS officer PK Valera, MLA Anil Joshiyara and party spokesperson Kailash Gadhvi, the Congress also sought more funds for Gujarat for education, health and other areas. "Gujarat needs more funds (special package) for providing quality education at school and college level. The state has left healthcare services at the mercy of private sector, and more funds are needed for the state to have its own institutions that provide healthcare at affordable rates," the party said.

The Opposition also made a case for special funds for Gujarat for SC & ST welfare, farmers, strengthening the justice delivery system.
