Eight artists will perform at the eighth edition of the Water Festival at Adalaj ni Vav on November 25. The festival that began as an effort to reintroduce monuments to the youth through music has also had in the past used Sarkhej Roza, Bhadra and other important landmarks in and around Ahmedabad as its backdrop.

The festival will have performance by noted tabla player Ustad Fazal Qureshi, Zubin Balaporia of Indus Creed band, guitarist Sanjay Divecha and Sarangi player Dilshad Khan. Drummer Arun Kumar and Bass virtuoso Sheldon D'Silva and Dholak player Navin Sharma will also be performing at the event. Folk musician Kutle Khan from Rajasthani will also be present at the evening.

"In the festival, the monument is the hero and music is the second focus. When we first thought of the festival, we realised that it could be a good way of bridging the gap between youth and their knowledge and interest in monuments," said Birwa Qureshi, founder of the festival.

Over the years, she said the programme has helped create awareness about the monuments. "The recall value of monuments has increased thanks to the festival. We are not saying we are solely responsible for it but after the event those who evince interest in doing their bit for the monuments are put in touch with the concerned authorities,"said Qureshi.

She said this year they had also been exploring to hold the event at two monuments in Junagadh but eventually it did not work out.

Birwa said in the future they may also explore the possibility of a Champaner festival to highlight the World Heritage Site.

To a question on the recent controversy surrounding Ahmedabad's name change, Qureshi said that it needed to be a consensus decision. "For me, it is an emotional decision and I believe it is so for Ahmedabad too. We need to ask everyone what to do and what they want because in the end it is a matter of our identity," said Qureshi.
