Doctors need to communicate with their patients better and show more empathy, mulled experts from various domains at a discussion on ‘Violence against doctors’ held at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad on Monday. The experts were discussing reasons that have led to an increase in incidents of violence against doctors across the country, posing a question about their profession. Interestingly, the report of the panel discussion will be submitted to the Indian Management Association (IMA), confirmed Professor Rajesh Chandwani, chairperson of Centre for Management of Healthcare Services of IIMA, which organised the event.

Taking a dig at the recent order which terms doctor-patient relationship as that of consumer, Dr Bharat Gadhvi, regional director, HCG Hospitals Gujarat, said, “There are a couple of reasons for increase in such incidents that include the recent order declaring doctor-patient relation as that of a consumer-service provider. Another reason is lack of clarity related to post-mortem. There is no availability of pathological post-mortem. Communication and counselling is also the key.”

Talking about the way to prevent such incidents, Dr Gadhvi said, “At our hospital, we have declared Code Violet, which means once the code is declared, key people of the hospital including our staff would gather where the incident has happened and one of them would immediately call the cops.”

As one of the recommendations to the Medical Council of India, advocate Harsh Rawal said, “Like we have moot-court events where law students have to face the entire judicial set-up and argue to understand the real situation in courts, even MCI should make demonstrations of aggressive incidents a part of the medical syllabus.”
