Two days after DNA reported that MJ Library authorities issued a dress code for its readers, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) swung into action on Saturday and removed a notice put up at the library banning visitors in 'short' clothes.

After the report came out, AMC standing committee chairman Pravin Patel had promised to visit the library and look into the matter.

Speaking with DNA on Saturday, Patel said according to librarian Bipin Modi, the notice was the outcome of frequent complaints by senior citizens.

"Many senior citizens regularly visit the library, and they feel quite awkward to see the young generation in short clothes. Forget allowing grown-ups to interact with each other, they cannot even tolerate kids, boys and girls, sitting next to each other," Patel said, adding that the entire episode was shameful and caused much embarrassment to the AMC.

While Modi remained incommunicado, Patel said, "I personally looked into the matter as such regressive measures cannot be entertained at public places. This has been communicated to the librarian as well."

Shakeel Shaikh, a regular at the library, who was vocal against the dress code, said, "I'm happy they realised the mistake and removed the poster. I hope gradually there will be change in their attitude."

Another visitor, Girish Patel, said, "Finally, after media's intervention, they have removed the notice. We had an argument over it with the library staff and we felt defeated then. I like the library to be just a place where we can read without worrying about rules and complexities."
