In a major relief, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Friday announced financial assistance up to five lakh per annum for higher studies to students who are orphans, divyang and children of martyrs. The students who want to pursue higher studies in medical, para-medical, engineering and are unable to afford self-financed colleges will be provided Rs 5 lakh per annum, said Rupani during the inaugural ceremony of Grand Education Fair being held at Gujarat University Convention Hall.

Urging students to pursue higher education, Rupani said, "If students get proper guidance, they can touch the sky. The state government is providing financial assistance to students. For students in medical, engineering and para-medical courses, the state government is paying 50% fees. Every year, we spend 800 crores for this. Then we thought who will worry for a widows son or an orphan or a martyr? Do not worry, we will bare your expenses. Go ahead, study a lot. Yesterday, we passed a resolution to provide Rs 5 lakh per annum to such students who cannot afford the fee of self-financed colleges."

The three day fair that began on February 2 has been extended for a day for school children. Speaking about the same, Anju Sharma, Principal Secretary, Higher Education said, "Many school children have exams till Feb 3-4 hence we have extended it by a day and seminars will be repeated for them. This year we also have start-ups of Gujarat University and Gujarat Technological University demonstrated with an aim to encourage other students."

Interestingly, the state government is introducing university excellence awards.
