As part of the probe into the digging of a tunnel in Sabarmati Central Jail, a joint team from Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) reconstructed the event in the jail premises on Saturday. The sleuths were accompanied by photographers who recorded the scene.

According to sources, the team sought to understand the prisoners’ plan of fleeing the jail. It studied the area to find out how long it took them to dig the tunnel, which was detected on February 10, and what tools were used in the activity. After examining the area, FSL officials revealed that the diameter of the tunnel was 3 metres and not 4.5, as stated by DCB officials.

Contrary to the earlier version that the terrorists wanted to access the main drainage line to escape, FSL officials pointed out that there was no drainage pipe in the area, and the accused wanted to escape from the rear side, digging deeper to cross the 21-feet-long wall as the security arrangements were less in that area.

To confirm FSL’s version, the assistance of the road and building department has been sought. FSL officials have submitted their report of the investigation to their director, JM Vyas.

Meanwhile, officials are going through the visitors’ records and details of calls made by the accused in the last one year to get more leads in the case.

“We are going through all the records to know more about their contacts. This way, we will be able to investigate those who were in touch with these accused and visited them in the last one year,” said Himanshu Shukla, deputy commissioner of police, DCB.

Two mobile phones were seized during an earlier search operation. According to the police, the terror accused deleted the IMEI (international mobile equipment identity) number. However, they would be able to trace the number through a unique code that identifies a phone.
