The effect of the marathon in the city on Sunday was certainly evident at the morning sessions of the 34th Saptak music festival. While many music enthusiasts still made it to the venue, most others remained absent. This, however, did not deter the artistes from presenting exemplary musical sessions for all present.

The day commenced at 10.30 am with ‘laagan bheej gayi’ by vocalist Madhu Bhatt Tailang in raag asavri in taal dhamaar followed by minyan ki to in small verse. She was accompanied by Pravin Arya on the pakhawaj. The audience was bowled over by her performance.

Second in line, was Ustad Shahid Parvez on the sitar, who presented raags shudh sarang and Bhairavi, accompanied by Ustad Akram Khan on the tabla.

The evening session yet again saw Saptak students performing on stage. This time, vocalists took the centre stage. Students Harshit Mehta, Nirav Barot and Raag Mehta were seen on stage delivering vocal renditions with absolute ease.

Pristine renditions of raag yaman in ‘gao gao mangal geet badhai’, had the audience swaying their heads. Students Shreyans Shah on the tabla, Jay Shah on the harmonium and Morni Jaykrishna on the tanpura accompanied the vocalists to add sparkle and finesse to the entire session.

Next to perform on a breezy and cold Sunday night, was Partho Sarodi on the sarod. He presented raag shudh vasant accompanied by a tabla player from the Banaras gharana Shubh Maharaj. On tanpura was artiste Pooja.

A day earlier at Saptak
Saturday night was pleasantly different as Pt Anindo Chatterjee gave a solo tabla performance when he presented teen taal followed by peshkar, rela, tukda and farmaishe chakradhar. He was assisted by Anubrata Chatterjee on the tabla and Sabir Khan playing the sarangi. However, the limelight belonged to Shubha Mudgal in the later part of the evening. An open auditorium packed with music aficionados gathered exclusively to hear the ever versatile singer. She sang two verses of raag jog and was accompanied by Anish Pradhan on the tabla and Sudhir Nayak on the harmonium.
