It was a day of mourning for the Dawoodi Bohra community.

Shahzada Huzefabhai Moinuddin, son of Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin Moinuddin, died of cardiac arrest in Ahmedabad on Monday morning plunging the Dawoodi Bohra community in a pall of gloom.

Later in the afternoon, due to a stampede at the Saraspur Roza by people who had come to view the funeral procession, a parapet wall collapsed, reportedly killing one person and injuring 25 others.

101-year-old Dr Burhanuddin is the head of the Dawoodi Bohra community across the world. Of the 25 injured, 13 were women who were then rushed to the Shardaben and VS Hospital.

Sources said that the people had to stand on the 12-feet high parapet adjoining the Bohra no Roza as there was a big crowd to view the funeral procession. “The parapet could not take the weight of so many people and hence gave way,” said a source.

Around 1.25 lakh people from across the country and the world are believed to have come to the area to be a part of the procession. Shaherkotada police inspector KK Parmar said they are not aware of any death in the incident and hence have registered a non-cognizable offence.
