The Institute of Law at Nirma University (INLU) on Saturday celebrated its 11th foundation day by organizing a panel discussion on data protection.

The panel discussion on 'The relevance of personal data and its protection in the digital age, addressing challenges to individuals privacy' had three speakers including Arghya Sengupta, Research Director, Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, New Delhi, Anjali Bhardwaj, Co-convenor, National Campaign for People's Right to Information and Srijan Pal Singh, Founder, Kalam Centre and Cyber Law Expert.

The panel discussion on 'Are our personal data safe and what about the regulations by state and Centre' kept revolving around the Data Protection Bill as well as Justice BN Sri Krishna Committee report on data protection.

"Human beings have been treated as a subject until. The social media platforms have gated us as a community in the last 20 years. Today, the problem with the privacy is that no one reads the policy even before agreeing to most of it, and also it being so much filled with legal jargons it is definitely a cumbersome process," Sengupta, who is also part of the committee, said.

Anjali Bhardwaj discussed the current Right to Information structure where government, at times, holds the information in the name of secrecy that is essential for the general people. They need to know the data presented by agencies as well as the ministers. On the contrary, the government wants to protect its privacy, she said.

"Right to privacy means right to be forgotten where there is an option to erase/delete the accounts managed and collected by the person himself. But this is not the current scenario as most of the social media platforms have only a deactivation policy," Srijan Pal Singh said.
