Get ready to pay more for power as Torrent Power has increased fuel surcharge for the current quarter by 10 paise per unit. This comes even as the four state-owned electricity distribution companies reduced the surcharge by two paise.

Torrent Power, which supplies electricity in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Surat, revised the Fuel and Power Purchase Price Adjustment (FPPPA) charge for the second quarter, i.e. July to September 2018, from Rs 1.76 per unit to Rs 1.86, a senior official said.

The company said in a communication to Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) that recoverable FPPPA for the first quarter of 2018-19 works out to be Rs 0.93 per unit in addition to base FPPPA of Rs 1.23 per unit.

"The total FPPPA charge works out at Rs 2.16 per unit. We have commenced billing at FPPPA rate of Rs 1.86 per unit from the billing month of July, as against Rs 1.76 in the first quarter," an official said.

The increase in surcharge would affect over 22.5 lakh consumers of Torrent Power in the three cities.

Torrent sources nearly half of its total power requirement from its gas-based 1147.5 MW power plant in Surat, at an average price of Rs 6.03 per unit, which is 10 per cent higher than its overall average power purchase price of Rs 5.53 per unit. Gas prices have been on the rise in recent months, and hence the fuel surcharge has gone up.

On the other hand, the four state-owned power distribution companies, which cater to 1.45 crore consumers, reduced FPPPA charge for the second quarter by 2 paise per unit.

From Rs 1.63 per unit in the first quarter, the four discoms have revised the fuel surcharge to Rs 1.61 per unit. The Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) wrote to the four discoms on Tuesday and directed them to charge FPPPA of Rs1.61 per unit for July-September 2018 from all categories of consumers except agricultural consumers.
