While the world is getting more and more connected technologically, many of us seem to be feeling disconnected from ourselves and others mentally. The ubiquity of always connected mobile devices is leading to societal exhaustion, Deepak Kumar Hota, Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Earth Movers, said on Tuesday. He was speaking to the graduating students of Nirma University at its 25th convocation. A total of 604 students were conferred degrees during the event.

Addressing the students on a technologically enabled world, Hota said: "While the world is getting more and more technologically connected, many of us seem to be feeling more mentally disconnected from others and from ourselves. The ubiquity of always connected mobile devices is leading to societal exhaustion. If you look around, people walking around on the street, people at restaurants, even parks, waiting lounge, nobody is having conversations anymore. All are sitting and having their dinner looking at their phones because our brain is so addicted to it. Therefore, make genuine effort to connect with people face to face."

Citing a research report, he said youngsters today strive for a socially prescribed perfectionism which can lead to anxiety and nervousness. "Increasingly, there is a fear that many of today's young people hold irrational ideals for themselves, ideals that manifest in unrealistic expectations for professional achievement. It also transcends to a pre-eminent myth that things, including themselves, should be perfect. You should not feel depressed if you seem to be falling behind, it is not your time yet. You should not compare yourself to everyone else. Everyone has something different and unique in them and you won't reach where you want to be, all at the same time," he added.

He concluded by saying that the learning curve is also the earning curve and augmented proficiency will help one climb the corporate ladder faster.

The students who got their degrees on Tuesday included 22 PhD, 252 MBA students, 49 MBA students (Family Business & Entrepreneurship), 48 BBA-MBA Integrated students, 1 BBA student, 105 BA LLB students, 57 BCom LLB students, 55 BBA LLB students, 3 Master of Law (LLM), 4 BTech students, 1 Diploma student, 3 MTech students, and 4 MSc students. As many as 24 students got medals for outstanding performance.
