Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader Hardik Patel on Tuesday said the Congress should move a private member's bill in the state Assembly for Patel reservation, if they are concerned about the community. He held a meeting with Congress' Paresh Dhanani, the leader of opposition in the Gujarat Assembly, in Gandhinagar, and put forward his proposal. He was joined by other PAAS members.

Patel urged the Congress to move a private member's bill in the next session of the Assembly. The meeting went on for more than an hour. Dhanani told Patel and his colleagues that the Congress had moved a bill proposing 20% reservation for weaker sections of the upper class community who did not have reservation.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Patel said: "We have approached the opposition to move this bill because the BJP-ruled state government never pay heed to our demands even after repeated attempts. We have also urged the opposition leader to write to the OBC commission chairman in the state, Sugnaben Bhatt, to conduct a survey of communities as soon as possible so that they become eligible for reservation."

The PAAS leader pointed out that BJP-ruled Maharashtra has 16% quota reserved for the Maratha community. Drawing comparison between the two BJP-ruled states, he said the same party had been in power in Gujarat for 25 years but they had not provided any quota to the Patel community.

"If a private member's bill comes up for discussion, the BJP will have to make its position clear on quota for our community," Patel said.

Dhanani, who was also present at the press conference, said that in March this year his party's state unit chief Amit Chavda (who is also an MLA) had moved a bill for 20% reservation to economically weaker sections among the unreserved category. However, before every session of the Assembly, a draw is conducted to randomly select the private members' bills for discussion in the House, Dhanani explained.

"I would request the ruling party to take up the reservation bill without holding a draw in the next session of the Assembly," the Congress leader said.
