A scuffle between leaders of two political parties, BJP and the Congress, took place in Surat district, on Monday. The incident occurred during the by-election for Sarbhon seat of Bardoli taluka panchayat.
Later, frenzied workers of both the parties gathered at their respective offices which created tension among the local residents.
The situation took an ugly turn after BJP leader from Surat Kunvarji Halpati allegedly slapped Congress MLA from Mandvi and president of Surat district Congress Prabhu Vasava, late on Sunday evening during the by-election for Sarbhon seat of Bardoli taluka panchayat. Halpati is former Congress MLA from Bardoli.
According to reports, Halpati along with party workers was campaigning in the village on Sunday.
While sitting at village’s Chand-Devi falia, a Congress worker abused him. Enraged over this Halpati allegedly slapped him.
On learning about incident, an infuriated Prabhu Vasava along with supporters rushed to the spot and a heated argument ensued between Vasava and Halpati during which Halpati allegedly slapped Vasava also. Workers of both parties, however, intervened, tried to pacify both the leaders and brought the situation under control.
On Tuesday, Prabhu Vasava lodged a complaint with the Bardoli police station against Kunvarji Halpati and his supporters. In his complaint, Vasava said Halpati passed lewd remarks, spoke abusive words and also slapped him. The police are investigating the matter.
The incident tensed political circles in Surat district, with leaders of both parties asking their workers to remain alert and maintain contact with them.
Till late in the evening, workers continued to visit party headquarters in Bardoli and Vyara. Party leaders of BJP and Congress preferred to maintain silence on the issue.
