Congress rebel from Lunawada, Ratansinh Rathod, won as an independent candidate by a margin of 3,200 votes.

Rathod, a member of Indian National Congress for two decades, was fired by the party when he didn’t recall his nomination after the party decided to field Paranjadityasinh Paramar from the constituency.

Parmar is the son-in-law of veteran Congress leader Digvijaya Singh.

When DNA contacted Rathod after he won the election, he said, “I was a congress candidate but turned a rebel after I was denied the party mandate. I had served the party for a long time. But I am happy now that I have won. I haven’t decided to join any party as of now, and might not join any.”

He said his priority is to provide a god drainage system and proper water infrastructure in his constituency.
