Confederation of All India Traders' (CAIT) drive to oppose Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail sector failed to gain any response in Ahmedabad. CAIT had begun a 'rathyatra' to oppose deals like the one between Walmart and Flipkart. The rath was in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, but it failed to gain much traction in the city. Participants blame lack of strong leadership in the city for subdued response of traders. This is the second time within a week that a program led by CAIT did not get response from the stakeholders. The all India strike of traders, last Friday, was also a sort of fiasco.

"We have been to a number of states. Traders welcomed us everywhere. But in Ahmedabad, the participation from the traders is the worst," said Amarshi Karia, vice president of Maharashtra unit of CAIT. SVS Walia, who is travelling along with Karia on the 20,000 km yatra, said that he has been disappointed with the response in Ahmedabad. "Whether it was Chhatisgarh or Bihar, the rath met with enthusiastic response of traders. While the involvement in Ahmedabad is almost non-existent," Walia told DNA.

CAIT's national chairman Mahendra Shah passed the buck to Harshad Giletwala, vice president of CAIT in Gujarat. Giletwala told DNA that this was because of the delay in arrival. "The rath was supposed to arrive in the city on October 1, but it was delayed because a tyre got punctured. Then there were issues of permissions by police," said Giletwala.

Sources in the know of things said that they are caught in a dilemma as BJP-ruled government is allowed FDI in retail, while CAIT, whose office bearers hold allegiance to BJP are opposing it, resulting in lack of involvement on the part the part of volunteers.
