The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has changed the route for Sabarmati Marathon once again. This year, the civic body has chosen a route passing through posh residential localities. Moreover, it has preferred not to change finishing point of the race as mulled earlier. The fourth edition of Sabarmati Marathon will take place on January 5, 2014. The first trial run was organised on December 22 while the second one will be organised on December 29 to help the participants get familiar with the route.
AMC has been experimenting with routes to get better support for the runners In the first edition, the civic body had chosen the old city route to Kankaria lake. However, that was changed as the roads were found to be very busy and runners had to face a lot of trouble due to heavy traffic on narrow roads. In the next edition of the run in December 2011, the civic body decided to take the less crowded SG Road after reaching Thaltej crossroads from Vallabh Sadan. The next time, the civic body changed its mind again. This time it took a right turn from Doordharshan crossroads to reach Sattadhar crossroads and SP Ring Road, which was less crowded.
However, in its efforts to avoid confrontation with the public and early morning traffic, the civic body officials seemed to have missed the thinning support for the runners on the route. This could be the reason why this time it has decided to take the race through residential areas of Satellite, Vastrapur and Prahladnagar. “Our aim is to get good crowd to support the runners,” said DP Desai, deputy municipal commissioner of AMC’s publicity department.
The civic body had earlier decided to follow the international tradition of finishing the marathon in a stadium. It had decided that Sardar Patel Stadium at Navarangpura would be the finishing point.
However, now it has decided once again to keep Vallabh Sadan as starting and finishing point. “It would have been difficult to get a crowd to fill the stadium. Moreover, from administrative point of view also it is more convenient to have the same spot for start and finish,” said a highly placed official in AMC.
