To the surprise of thousands of BJP party members, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani did not attend the dharna organised by the party on Thursday. Rupani was supposed to attend a fast arranged by the saffron party in Lal Darwaja near Bhadra Fort, to protest the log jam created by the Congress in Parliament.

However, his wife Anjali Rupani and Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama attended the camp in his stead.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation had made all preparations for the CM to hold a fast. Hawkers were not allowed to set up their kiosks at the street market since Wednesday. Police personnel were also deployed throughout the day on the road from Gandhinagar to Ahmedabad in anticipation of Rupani's arrival.

Gujarat BJP spokesperson Bharat Pandya said, "All our leaders, including CM Vijay Rupani, observed a fast against the negative approach Congress has developed towards democracy. CM Rupani preferred to stay at his Gandhinagar home, as he was caught up with some official work."

Ahmedabad city president Jagdish Panchal said, "Although Rupani was scheduled to sit on a 'symbolic fast' with other BJP leaders at Lal Darwaja area between 11 am and 5 pm, he decided to observe the fast while working from Gandhinagar."

Gujarat BJP president Jitu Vaghani observed his fast in Vadodara. He said, "The Congress was corrupt when it was in power, and now, when people gave them the mandate to sit as Opposition, they failed to deliver those duties with a healthy approach. Precious hours of Parliament were wasted because Congress and its allies created a ruckus in the house and did not let us complete the proceedings."

Deputy CM Nitin Patel appeared at the fast camp in Mehsana. He said, "Congress committed a great sin by not letting important Bills pass in the House, which were meant for the larger good of the society. They can not stand to see anyone apart from a Nehru or a Gandhi as the Prime Minister."

All the senior leaders of BJP, including ministers, attended the programme in various corners of the state.
