“To read, is to lead.” And CM Narendra Modi perhaps applies this adage to the tee, whenever he is out addressing his social events.

Take Shala Praveshotsav, for example.

Modi on Friday visited three villages – Deva Vanta, Bantwa and Meghalpur – in Sojitra taluka of Anand district for the state government’s annual school enrolment drive. He asked villagers whether they know that the primary schools in their villages are more than 100 years old. They were flummoxed, yet in awe of the man’s knowledge of their village.

He connected with them immediately. Clearly, Narendra Modi had done his homework.

The primary school at Deva Vanta completed 100 years on November 1, 2012, while the one in Bantwa did so four years in August 2008. The primary school in Meghalpur is 109 years old.

And his speeches at the event were bereft of any political innuendos, as he chose to talk about education, sensitising villagers about their shortcomings in the matter and how they can improve learning at their homes. Though crux of his speeches remained same in every village, he had enough anecdotes in his oratory arsenal to keep the audience interested all through. Even people moving with him would have something new to talk about at every location.

Modi, in his speeches, appealed to villagers to participate and monitor their school’s activities and the administration. He also asked them to treat teachers with respect.

“When their children reach home (from school), mother generally ask: ‘what did you eat in school?’ instead of asking: ‘what did you learn in school?’,” said Modi. “No parent inquires about whether the teacher is addicted to tobacco or not. Do you ask whether the child is taught yoga or not?” Modi posed such and similar questions at every venue.

The government can spend money to build classrooms and hire teachers to teach, but the real education cannot be inculcated in children if parents do not know what they are learning, said Modi to villagers at the event.

He urged villagers to celebrate their school’s foundation day as a festival in the village.
