It was a landmine test for the Hansol residents to sustain their fight against the military cantonment authorities only on their grit. Now, a cluster of 400 families has a reason to cheer. And, why not? Finally, a war they have been fighting with the authorities since 2011 has been won.

A press release by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Sunday, ordering to open the closed roads, has also unlocked the fate of these people. "Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, along with several Members of Parliament and elected vice-presidents Cantonment Boards, in a meeting on May 4, took up the matter with Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat, Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra and senior officers of the Ministry," the release said.

"We have been taking a longer route to reach home. The stretch is at least 500 mt. The Army had closed it citing security reasons near Taj Hotel. Now, we have won the battle," Raju Pariyani, one of the residents, told DNA.

The civic body, in standing committee meetings, has been raising the issue but in vain. The area comes under the Town Planning (TP) Scheme number 67.

"We want an immediate implementation of the Defence Minister's order," a cheering Pariyani said.

The following has been decided at the meeting:

  • All closed roads in cantonments to be reopened immediately.

  • The issue of closure of individual roads will be reviewed de novo, in conformity with the provisions as laid down.

  • A simplified detailed SOP will shortly be issued
