Prime Minister Narendra Modi's hometown Vadnagar bears historical importance in Gujarat because Kirti Toran, Sharmishtha lake and Tana Riri monuments have been attracting tourists across Gujarat here.

It also has a connection with Buddhism as was found after an excavation by archaeological survey of India(ASI), when they discovered the remains of an ancient Buddhist monastery. PM Modi reminded the residents about this with palpable pride.

Modi said, "The 2,500-year-old civilisation in Vadnagar never vanished. This city also has links with Buddhism and this was found during excavation. Almost 10,000 monks were trained here. Hiuen Tsang has mentioned in his manuscripts that Vadnagar was known as Anandpur when he visited thousands of years ago."
