Civic body plans 10 new parks across city's west, east zones

The cost of the parks is not yet decided, but they will be completed at the cost of around Rs. 2 crores.

The parks and garden department of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has planned to give 10 new parks to newly added areas in the city. the aim is to increase the tree across these regions.

"At present, there are 228 parks in the city. But there are a few areas where there are no parks or public gardens. We are aiming to provide gardens and areas for recreational activities to the people of Gota, Nikol, Vastral, Chandkheda, Ranip etc," said Jignesh Patel, director parks and garden department, AMC.

"The areas have developed and people are residing at those places at large. We are aiming to give them the garden space within this budget period only.

The gardens will be ready by February 2018," added Patel. The cost of the parks is not yet decided, but they will be completed at the cost of around Rs. 2 crores.

At present, the city has only around 4.66% tree cover, and the areas just outside it has around 10% greenery.

To increase the tree cover, AMC is trying to plant more saplings.

"This year, we have planted 68,000 saplings. The drive will continue until December. We are encouraging people to join us and help plant more saplings," said the director. "As a part of Green Ahmedabad initiative, we have developed certain rich green pockets in the city. At Gyaspur, we have planted and grown more than 68,000 trees near Pirana, which in itself is a bio-diversity rich pocket.," said Patel.
