City witnesses 300 cases of animal injuries in 15 days

While Amdavadis are in a festive mood this month,  the city has shockingly witnessed nearly 300 cases of animal injuries over the past 15 days. Thanks to organisations such as Jivdaya Charitable Trust and the recently-launched animal ambulance by the state government, whose volunteers worked day and night, in handling emergencies that arose from crackers, accidents, noise pollution, etc.

The free ambulance service, called Karuna ambulance 1962, launched by the state government this month has received nearly 2000 cases, including 754 emergency calls, from across the state. As per data shared by Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI), the team handled the highest number of cases of animal injuries from Ahmedabad (139) followed by Surat Vadodara (75) and Surat (69). The team had received 347 calls from city and attended 139 cases.

Jivdaya Charitable Trust which has been working since 2007 and received nearly 150 injury cases of animals and birds in just four days of Diwali break. Gira Shah, the founder of Jivdaya Charitable Trust, said, “We treated 94 birds and 41 animals, of which 20 birds and 4 animals were declared dead on arrival. Majority of the cases were because of accidents, trauma and loud noise pollution.”

Dr Shashikant Jadhav, clinical director, Jivdaya who handled some cases during the Diwali break said, “One of the cases we received was of a dog who went into shock due to loud noise due to crackers. But the majority were accident cases.”
