With Swachh School Survekshan rankings scheduled to be announced for AMC-run schools on Friday, the Centre plans to adopt the same model for government-run schools across India from next year under Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM).

"Ahmedabad Sanitation Action Lab (ASAL) team undertook a pilot project — Swachh School Survekshan — in 2017 on the recommendation of SBM, Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. A total of 375 AMC-run schools were surveyed in June and July," said Manvita Baradi, director of Urban Management Centre. "Based on the ASAL's programme, a cleanliness competition will be organised for all government-run schools across the country from next year," added Baradi.

Dr Bhavin Soalnki, in-charge medical officer of health, AMC, said, "After starting ASAL, we have revisited several things related to hygiene. We have made certain changes in the designs of toilets and water stands (facilities) of different height. By doing this, we have enhanced water and toilet services along with ensuring better sanitation."

INSPIRING MODEL

  • The ranking is based on points given by teachers, students and a third party —UMC

  • The ASAL, launched on October 2, 2014 under the supervision of Urban Management Centre (UMC), is a three-year action research programme for innovative solutions on sanitation in schools and slums.
