Chief minister Vijay Rupani inaugurated the newly constructed, nearly 1,500 metre-long flyover at Bopal cross roads along with a police station on Thursday. The bridge, interestingly, has been named after one of the founders of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The bridge has been named after Lakshmanrao Inamdar, popularly known as ‘Vakil Saheb’, who is credited with inducting Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an RSS balswayamsevak (junior cadet) and later becoming the latter’s political mentor.

Speaking at the inauguration event, Rupani said, “The previous government didn’t engage in developmental works due to ‘fund crunch’, but we are able to go ahead with the same as we get funds from the Centre. I am happy to dedicate this flyover, which will help ease traffic and pollution, to the public.”

“Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi used to say that if we send one rupee from the Centre, the intended beneficiary only receives 15 paise. That has changed; now, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi sends one rupee from Delhi, works worth Rs1.25 are done,” claimed Rupani.

Taking a jibe at Opposition Congress, deputy chief minister Nitin Patel said, “Unlike Congress, we are dedicated to serve the public honestly. We dedicate this Rs85-crore flyover to the people. We will be building many more flyovers spanning from Sarkhej to Gandhinagar in the near future. Built at an estimated cost of Rs700 crore, these bridges will shorten the distance between Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad and ease movement of traffic,” added Patel.

Attempting to bluff the public, Patel blamed the Congress for not giving funds to Gujarat when in power at the Centre, even though projects like the riverfront and lakefront were partly funded under the UPA-initiated JNNURM scheme for urban development.

Also displaying lack of statistical coordination, Patel said that 1,500 trucks pass Bopal cross roads each day, while Rapani claimed that nearly 15,000 trucks pass from the road on a given day.
